This obstruction can cause epiphora, which is excessive or uncontrolled tearing.
The Jones tube procedure involves associating conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy, a standard surgery for treating obstruction of the upper tear duct through the canalicular system. This surgical intervention consists of creating a connection between the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the inside of the eye) and the tear sac, allowing tears to drain properly.
In cases where there is no functional tear sac or when dacryocystorhinostomy has not been effective, the Jones tube can be used to provide an alternative solution. The Jones tube is placed in the canaliculus to help restore normal tear drainage and reduce epiphora.
