The eyes are one of our most powerful expressions. Through them, we communicate emotions, establish connections, and enjoy the world around us. However, issues like ectropion and entropion can affect both the health and beauty of our eyes, limiting vision and causing discomfort.

Ectropion refers to the outward turning of the eyelid, exposing the conjunctiva and leading to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity to light. On the other hand, entropion is when the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the surface of the eye, which results in pain, irritation, redness, and even corneal damage.

Ectropion and entropion surgery is the most effective treatment to correct these eyelid abnormalities. This is an outpatient surgical procedure that typically takes 30 to 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia.

For ectropion, the surgery involves repositioning and adjusting the eyelid using sutures or implants. Depending on the cause of the ectropion, various techniques can be used, including tarsal strip, Kuhnt-Szymanowski procedure, Lazy-T, retractor repair with everting sutures, medial spindle, lateral or medial canthopexy. In cases of tumor lesions, excision of the lesion is performed.

For entropion, surgery involves repositioning the eyelid into its correct position using Quickert everting sutures. This technique involves placing sutures that evert the eyelid to prevent the eyelashes from touching the eye’s surface. In cases caused by scarring, other techniques like tarsal fracture with terminal rotation, lamellar division with posterior lamellar advancement, tarsal strip, and buccal mucosal grafts may be used.

Benefits of Ectropion and Entropion Surgery:

  • Reduction in eye pain and irritation
  • Improved eyelid function
  • Prevention of corneal damage
  • Enhanced eye aesthetics
  • Increased comfort and quality of life
