Ocular cryotherapy is a therapeutic procedure that uses cold to treat various eye conditions. This technique involves applying very low temperatures to the ocular structures to achieve different therapeutic effects.
During the ocular treatment, the patient sits in front of the ophthalmologist in an examination room or operating theater. First, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the eye and minimize discomfort during the procedure. The ophthalmologist uses a specialized device containing a probe or metallic tip that can be cooled to very low temperatures.
Depending on the area to be treated, the cryotherapy probe or metallic tip is applied directly to the affected ocular structure. The extreme cold induced by cryotherapy has several therapeutic effects, depending on the treatment objective.
