Where to go in case of an emergency?

For ophthalmological emergencies, we are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at Clínica Girona, located at C/ Barcelona, 204-206, 2nd Floor, where we can also perform emergency surgeries.

  • Urgent Care Service (24h) Clínica Girona, where you will be seen by a doctor who will conduct an initial assessment. If the emergency occurs during business hours, you can also go to the Institut d’Oftalmologia.
  • At the Institut d’Oftalmologia, you can be seen for emergencies during the center’s operating hours:
    • Monday to Friday: 08:00 AM to 08:00 PM
    • It is recommended to call in advance: 972 41 24 13

In case of an emergency during the weekend, you should go to Urgencies Clínica Girona, where a general doctor will assess whether it is necessary to contact the on-call ophthalmologist.

What symptoms indicate the need to visit the ophthalmology emergency service?

You should visit the ophthalmologist in emergencies immediately in the case of:

  • Sudden vision loss.
  • Red or inflamed eyes.
  • Eye pain.
  • Eye trauma.

In the following cases, you can wait to see the specialist without needing to go to ophthalmology emergencies:

Within 1 to 3 days:

  • Infectious or allergic conjunctivitis.
  • Seeing floaters or flashes.
  • Intermittent double or blurred vision.
  • Light sensitivity (photophobia).

You have up to 3 weeks to visit the ophthalmologist in the following cases:

  • Sensation of burning, itching, tearing.
  • Progressive drooping eyelid.
  • Nodules or tumors on the eyelid.
  • Puffy eyes.

Visiting the ophthalmology specialist in emergency cases often helps to resolve the issue immediately or to make a quick diagnosis in time to determine the proper treatment or emergency intervention if necessary.
